The Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies, Pacific Rim Institute, on Whidbey Island offers environmental science programs for children, teens and adults of all ages. They needed more and better spaces for teaching and learning. We led a charrette to form the Master Development Concept Plan to develop and upgrade 50 acres and 100K sf total building area.
We held a design charrette in association with the Northwest American Institute of Architects DAT volunteers which morphed into a consulting session with Project Request Review Team Members. Together we came up with guiding principles for the redevelopment of 160 acres of Bellingham's waterfront.
The NW Chapter of the American Institute of Architects sponsored a three day master design charrette with expert volunteers in planning, transportation, economics and architecture. After meeting with numerous City of Stanwood stakeholders, the resulting plan was presented to the community to unanimous praise.
The Center for Local Self Reliance is a non-profit organization that was planning the redevelopment of a former park land area. There is a historic caretaker home on the grounds which the Center wanted to convert to an education building to teach about local agriculture and other sustainable living strategies. A public meeting was held and designs came together over a couple of days.
Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship and the Whatcom Day Academy hosted a two day charrette to plan their expansion. The church and the Academy were growing and both needed more space. This 160 acre highway oriented tourist destination mixed use masterplan was developed during a 2 day charrette. Representatives from Trillium Corporation, Disney Development (Prive-Harrison), Knotts Berry Farm (Terry Van Gorder, President) and the president of Six Flags Parks participated. A story was developed of a growing homestead that evolves into a demonstration of the bounty of the northwest, including agriculture, timber and fishing.
South Springs Homes at Cordata is a 750 home project in Bellingham, WA. This is a redevelopment project of an existing. approved 750 home project to make changes to reduce wetland impacts by 75% without changing the density of the residential neighborhood. The owners wanted a plan for the adaptive reuse of an existing 24,000 sq. ft. 3 story, industrial building built in 1929 on a brownfield waterfront site. This Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) office building involved numerous consultants to brainstorm all of the possible design methods to achieve a more sustainable design in an economical fashion for this speculative, private development.
This 85 acre unimproved area within city limits needed a density of 739 homes to be economically feasible according the the property owner. The development was extremely controversial in the community.
